Despite the standard navigation start times – July 25, 2014, FESCO will begin navigation in the eastern region of Arctic 5 days earlier owing to numerous applications from ship-owners.
The Krasin Icebreaker will provide navigation to vessels along the Northern Sea Route in the eastern Arctic region from July 20 until the beginning of November this year, under the command of the experienced captain Roman Nikolayevich Mogilyan.
Active Arctic navigation preparations are also underway on FESCO freight ships with an ice class of Arc 4 and up according to the Russian Maritime register classification. 10 transport vessels are set for arctic shipping in the summer-autumn season 2014.
The Northern Sea Route is the shortcut between the European part of Russia and the Far East. Now, many countries in the world are showing a great interest in the development of transportation along this unique Arctic route. This is due to the increase in turnover between European countries and the Asia-Pacific region and the development of large-scale oil and gas deposits on the Arctic shelf. Therefore, at the moment the NSR is of strategic importance, not only for Russia, but also for other national economies.
FESCO has more than 100 years of experience in the Arctic, which all began with the Kolyma steamer setting sail on September 1, 1911.
